Hi Fanny, I came across your website on Pinterest and love all your budget and money saving tips! They are definitely needed for a poor grad student! I just came across this post and because I am pursuing a career in animal agriculture, I want to educate you on meat products, just as you have been educating me on money. "Pink slime" is meat that has been sanitized by using ammonium hydroxide, which is ammonia that is diluted by water. Although some people may not want their meat sanitized (which is raising the pH of the product and using something that is naturally found in the meat), it is definitely safer than allowing for high levels of E. coli to remain in the product which will lead to illness and possibly death.

Here is a link I would like for you to read about the reality of "pink slime" http://beefproducts.com/ammonium_hydroxide.php It contains scientific evidence, not just an opinion of a chef who may or may not know anything about the science behind this product.

The meat is safe and it should not be discarded when there are hungry children all the around the world, even here in the US.
