Hi Fanny, I came across your website on Pinterest and love all your budget and money saving tips! They are definitely needed for a poor grad student! I just came across this post and because I am pursuing a career in animal agriculture, I want to educate you on meat products, just as you have been educating me on money. “Pink slime” is meat that has been sanitized by using ammonium hydroxide, which is ammonia that is diluted by water. Although some people may not want their meat sanitized (which is raising the pH of the product and using something that is naturally found in the meat), it is definitely safer than allowing for high levels of E. coli to remain in the product which will lead to illness and possibly death.

The meat is safe and it should not be discarded when there are hungry children all the around the world, even here in the US.

Wow, this makes me even more happy I don’t eat red meat, gross. I wonder if ShopRite sells pink slime beef? The bf buys ground beef there and if they do we’ll definitely be switching exclusively to shopping for meat at A&P.

Does anyone know about the meat sold at Military base commissaries? Thats where I do all my shopping — and really dont want to be feeding my two young children anything like that!
