As Christmas is fast approaching, I hope you don’t have a Scrooge attitude about gift giving!

Everywhere you turn, there seems to be a sale going on.

I normally don’t go shopping on Black Friday but this year, I did… to one store… and it wasn’t crowded at all.

I found a local toy store that had 40% off all toys! I just happened to drive by the day before Thanksgiving to pick up a pie and saw the sale signs posted on the window.

I finished Christmas shopping for the kids on my list there. Hooray!

ways to save on holiday gifts

Even though Black Friday and Cyber Monday have passed, there is still time to save.

This year, I didn’t do Cyber Monday because I was exhausted and sick. But there are still sales going on.

1. Shop on the best days to get deals on toys, clothes, kitchen stuff, and more.

Rather-Be-Shopping.com has a list of best days to buy these things and they’re coming up.

2. Trim your list.

If you have a long gift list, it may be more cost conscious to do a gift exchange. Of course, this is something that needs to be discussed ahead of time and agreed up by the group, such as family members 18 and over.

Sites like elfster can help you draw names and even ask questions, anonymously, of your giftee.

3. Use Ebates when shopping online.

If you’re shopping online already, why not earn cash back? Sign up for Ebates and get a free $10 gift card.

Every time you shop at an Ebates affiliated online store, you earn cash back on your purchase. I’ve earned over $200 over the past 3 years.

4. Make handmade or photo gifts.

The most memorable and low cost gifts are ones made from the heart. Did you take photos throughout the year of friends and family? Turn them into a photo book, calendar, canvas print, or simply frame it.

5. Set your budget and stick to it.

The most important thing this holiday season is to stick to a budget. It’s tough when you see sales and deals that lure you to get off track.

Write out your gift list, ideas for gifts, and budgeted amount for each person. That makes it easier to stay accountable.

12 Comments on 5 Ways to Save on Holiday Gifts

  1. I just am now getting the Hanukkah gifts to our family, not many though, all year long I am thoughtful and kind that should be enough if it is not then they aren’t really paying attention to my Karma..What you give out into the universe is how you can live a peaceful life..I am going to salvy army to help some people and give the pennies and dimes I saved plus some turkey and ham I saved up to buy! Salvation Army saves lots of lives and they don’t pay their captains and wives enormous salaries and the people are for real..They help the homeless, hopeless and lost what a great organization to give to – Peace to you and joy!

  2. Thank you for the tips Fanny..!!

Along with the above tips, you should also compare prices for an item at different stores, You may land a better deal that way. Also avoid paying extra for packing materials and shipping costs.

If you’re creative, you can also try giving homemade gifts, jewelry this Christmas.

  3. I like to think the holidays are all year long..really just one or two days…I see the homeless and hungry in our tiny village all the time! Why not be sweet to Salvation Army, some thieves took the kettles in a shopping center..The storms that came thru made it impossible for people to give, they are down a lot of money, I save my coins up for them, I used to take food and dinners, we are not able to do so anymore, but I try thru the year to give them some money..They are not paid like the united good neighbor pays the top people the captain and their wives work on faith and hope in God..The robbers who stole the pots they would have helped them out I hope those criminals have a change of heart and return the money..How can people be so cruel as the kettle donations are the main fund raising for this fine organization…I pray for a safe return and some philanthropist to give a big donation..I know I will drop by a office and give what I can..It is the coldest, iciest and snowiest in many years and many need shelter and food and hydration and they have tiny babies to boot..I say why not!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. I meant to say it is so cold, icy and snowing that many cannot get to the kettles to give anything at all…Please consider a donation of money and or food they will gladly take and give you a receipt if you so choose to have one, I never do…I am compelled by the way I was raised to give to the poor, God said to do it and I have always done it a lot..It just makes me feel connected to my fellow man..please consider the Salvation Army, they will try to contact a missing relative for you and also they have programs here that help people in recovery from alcohol and drugs..They only try to do the very best for all mankind and they captains and their spouses and families live on faith and hope and love of the Lord they are not paid like many organizations do in our area, not at all..Merriest of Holidays, Happiest of Hanukkah, most healthy 2017 and God’s blessings to you and yours!
