Thai iced tea in a glass cup

Thai iced tea with boba is incredibly delicious and refreshing on hot days. And it’s super easy to make in under 5 minutes with my 2 shortcuts – instant boba and Thai iced tea concentrate.

Also, I’ll show you how to pour these beautiful looking layers in your drink.

What is Thai Iced Tea?

Thai iced tea is a black, spiced tea that originated from Thailand and is colored red with artificial color to make it distinctive from other teas. It is traditionally paired with sweetened condensed milk and when mixed with it, the tea turns orange.

Thai tea has a different taste than other iced teas in that it has hints of cardomom, star anise seed, and vanilla.

Thai iced tea was always one of those drinks I could ONLY get at a Thai restaurant. Back in the day, there were NO boba shops!

Fast forward 20 years and Thai iced tea can be found in non-Thai restaurants, boba shops, and even in Whole Foods.

Is there Thai Iced Tea without artificial food coloring?

To those who are sensitive to food coloring, you can use Thaiwalla Thai Tea Concentrate or Yim Tea Co Thai Tea Mix.

What is Instant Boba?

Instant boba is a quicker way to make boba at home. This instant boba kit from Trader Joe’s can be found in the freezer aisle.

To prepare this instant boba, microwave the frozen pouch in a bowl for just 45 seconds. Then cool down with ice.

How to Pour Layers

Here are my pouring tips:

  1. Be sure that all liquids are cold or room temperature, not warm or hot.
  2. Make sure the drink has lots of ice, at least 2 inches over the bottom layer.
  3. Use a measuring cup with a spout or milk frother cup to pour so that the liquid comes out in a narrow stream.
  4. Pour over 1 ice cube only. If the ice cube starts moving while you are pouring, then follow the ice cube.

Instructions

Prep Instant Boba

  • Place instant boba pouch into a small bowl and microwave for 45 seconds. When finished, remove bowl from microwave. Cut open pouch and pour boba liquid into bowl and add 2 ice cubes to cool down the boba, about 1-2 minutes.

Add Ice Cubes

  • Pour boba mixture into a tall glass cup. Place ice cubes into glass so that it's at least 2 inches above the boba mixture.

Pour Thai Iced Tea

  • Pour Thai iced tea concentrate into a measuring cup with a spout (or other container with a spout). Carefully pour Thai iced tea onto 1 ice cube, making sure to stay still. If the ice cube moves around, then follow the ice cube. Always make sure to have the milk hit the ice cube first before the jam layer.

Pour Milk

  • Pour milk into a measuring cup with a spout and carefully pour milk onto 1 ice cube without moving. Enjoy!
